Action-oriented diagnosis under real-time constraints

Abstract: We view diagnosis as the process of fault finding in a system which is exhibiting symptoms not consistent with our model of it. It is desirable that fault finding indicate actions to be performed, especially in real-time domains. We show how to represent actions and diagnoses in such a way as to always provide us with a godd action to perform when we reach a deadline; we also indicate a possible mechanism for representing these deadlines. We show an example of these concepts applied to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) domain.
