Plan-Based Construction of Strategic Explanations

Reference: Schulman, R. & Hayes-Roth, B. Plan-Based Construction of Strategic Explanations. March, 1988.

Abstract: Explanation has been cited as an important feature of knowledge systems. In the course of solving problems, knowledge systems often follow a strategic plan to control their reasoning. We demonstrate how stategic plans can be used to explain the behavior of a knowledge system. Furthermore, we propose a methodology for building explanatory capability into any knowledge system based on strategic planning. We illustrate the utility of this methodology in ExAct, a strategic explanation module built into the BB1 blackboard control architecture.
