Abstract: A compelling diagnosis identifies the system fault hypothesized to underlie observed symptoms and explains how the fault causes the symptoms. We describe an approach to diagnosis that exploits generic models of normal structure/function organization and potential faults for classes of systems. We illustrate our approach for the human repiratory system. We show how the underlying generic model and associated reasoning mechanism apply as well to other flow systems, such as urination and water delivery. These capabilities are implemented in the ICE system and are being used for diagnosis in the BB- ICU system for monitoring medical intensive care patients.
