ExAct: A Module for Explaining Actions

Reference: Schulman, R. & Hayes-Roth, B. ExAct: A Module for Explaining Actions. January, 1987.

Abstract: An intelligent system explains its actions by describing the actions, along with the considerations and decisions leading up to them. We present the ExAct module for explaining the actions of systems developed within the BB* environment and illustrate its capabilities with examples from the PROTEAN system for protein structure modelling. We discuss ExAct module's satisfaction of these criteria: general applicability, adaptability, completeness of underlying knowledge, ease of use, accuracy of explanation, comprehensibility of explanation, and appropriatness of explanation.
