Dear Fritz,

I would like to draw your attention to the variety of implemented
ontologies presented at the ECAI94 workshop 'Comparison of
implemented ontologies'. A number of ontologies were presented, and even
a couple of pairs of ontologies covering (roughly) the same
domain, thus allowing a comparison of the design choices.

One reason for the relative paucity of papers on actual ontologies
is probably that it is a LOT of work to design and implement one;
another is that understanding one often requires an understanding
of the domain concerned. My colleague Paul van der Vet and I felt compelled to
publish our ontology of engineering ceramics in a chemical journal,
as non-chemists will fail to appreciate several of the subtleties
involved.
