Abstract: Our long-term goal is the construction of an accessible and well-structured vocabulary for use by remote medical applications. As a first step, we have developed a flexible, robust communication protocol to allow access to information stored in the vocabulary server. We present a prototype implementation of our architecture for interaction with a medical vocabulary server. We have tested this protocol with run-time queries to the server from a remote medical application: an application that determines when patients who have AIDS may be eligible for certain clinical trials. This communication protocol enables collaborative improvement of the vocabulary by any network- connected researcher.
