Dear colleagues,

the program enclosed should give you an idea of the activities
going on in Europe in the area of standardization of product knowledge. As
you see, the opportunity of a strong interaction with the knowledge sharing
community and the special role of ontologies are well acknowledged in the
European STEP community. This workshop is especially devoted to the
interaction between these communities. It would be very nice if some of you
could attend.

I will be glad to talk with you on these ongoing activities at the
next meeting on Ontology Standards next week.

See you soon

-- Nicola

SECOND CALL AND FINAL PROGRAMME:

2ND WORKSHOP ON PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE SHARING AND INTEGRATION
(ProKSI-97)

April 17 - 18, 1997,
Sophia Antipolis, French Riviera (near Nice), France

This announcement confirms the dates and venue of the ProKSI-97
Workshop to be held in Sophia-Antipolis next month. It details
the workshop programme with its agenda and objectives.
A limited number of places for participants is still available
so that we encourage interested persons to contact us soon in
order to reserve an invitation.

*** GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

The workshop intends to provide a discussion forum for
specialists in product and knowledge modelling to become
familiar with current trends in both fields and to explore
the benefits from developing joint perspectives toward product
knowledge sharing and integration. The presentations shall
explain current modelling approaches, especially in standar-
dization efforts like STEP, KIF and others, and the discussions
will try to determine the possible added value of sharing
different viewpoints within these communities. As a result some
documented recommendations for further work are intended.

*** SHORT DESCRIPTION:

Product knowledge is widely distributed and stored in a variety
of ways, on paper, electronically, and in the minds of indi-
viduals. How can this knowledge be shared and integrated in
order to minimise revision loops and translation costs between
product generations and to obtain more flexibility in the use
of product knowledge by different kinds of applications? In
this workshop we will further investigate how product data
modelling, applications and standardization efforts can profit
from experiences in knowledge representation and vice versa.

*** INTENDED AUDIENCE:

This workshop is intended for discussion and interaction
between the following communities

- Industry (Product Engineers, Developers and Managers)
- Standardization Bodies (like ISO 10303 STEP)
- Technical Documentation
- Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Based Methods

*** MAIN TOPICS:

Specific issues and topics that may be addressed include,
but are not limited to:

- modelling issues for product data and knowledge
- requirements from users and applications
- ontologies for product knowledge sharing and reuse
- integration issues (syntactic and semantic)
- knowledge management and corporate memories
- STEP/EXPRESS perspectives
- relations between technical documentation and product
knowledge

*** TIME and VENUE:

Thursday, 17 April 1997, 09:00 h
to
Friday, 18 April 1997, 13:00 h

at
International Center for Advanced Communication (C.I.C.A.)
